Green Tip #8 – Recycle old batteries

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

There are so many devices we use everyday that are battery operated, such as remote controls, Wii controllers, cell phones, laptops, etc.  When these batteries have reached the end of their lifecycle (rechargeable or not they all eventually die), they should be recycled and not thrown out.  Batteries have harmful chemicals that if tossed to the landfill will eventually make their way into the waterways.

There are many locations that will allow you to drop off old batteries of any size.  Many business have started programs that allow employees to bring old batteries.  Just the other day I was in IKEA and they have a bin for you to drop off your old batteries.  Your local Department of Public Works probably has a location to drop these off as well.  Your cell phone carrier might even have a drop location.

Next time the juice runs out, make sure you don’t throw it out!

Green Tip #7 – Take shorter showers

Friday, February 15th, 2008

I have to say this is one that I often struggle with.  :)   If you are a morning shower person like myself, it may take you a little longer to get moving after a good (or not so good) night’s sleep.  I try to take no longer than 10 minutes in the shower.  Speaking with some friends, some people are in there for 20-30 minutes!  That is a LOT of water being used.  Depending on the pressure settings, there could be several gallons used per minute.

Even though it is the world’s most plentiful resource, it still takes a lot of other resources for it to reach your home in a useable state (gas, electricity, etc.).

Make the goal of your next shower to not only be clean, but to be GREEN!  :)

Green Tip #6 – Turn off the water when brushing your teeth

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Depending on how much you open the faucet and how long you brush your teeth, you could be wasting between 2-5 gallons of water.  According to our Oral-B Sonic toothbrush, it is recommended to brush at least 2 minutes.  During this 2 minutes if you leave the faucet open, you are wasting water.  You probably need a little water at the beginning to get your brush wet, at the end for cleaning off your brush, and rinsing off excess toothpaste from your teeth.  All of this should use much less than a 1/2 gallon of water.
