Green Tip #5 – Unplug unused appliances
Saturday, February 2nd, 2008There are many items around your house that when then are not in use are still drawing power. For instance, how many clocks do you really need in your kitchen? Often times there is one on the microwave, stove/oven, and even toasters have them now. When you are not using the appliances, unplug them so they don’t draw power.
Other items may include cell phone chargers that have those HUGE transformers on them. Even though your cell phone isn’t plugged into it, the transformer is still actually drawing power. If you don’t believe me, try sticking your tongue on one of the contacts.
Just kidding! But it really is drawing power.
According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, there are several other items, such as home theater components. When these components are in standby mode they still consume the same amount of power as a 75 or 100 watt light bulb running continuously. Consider using a power strip for the devices and cut power to the strip when the items are not in use.
Next time you are walking around your house, think about the items that you could unplug to save energy. If you think of other items to unplug, please leave comments with your suggestions. In the end you will be doing the right thing for the environment and the right thing for your wallet.
